Gravel Tips & Tuscany Essentials

What is gravel riding (and why it’s so popular)?

Gravel riding covers a wide range of surfaces—from smooth white roads to farm lanes and light off-road. A gravel bike is the versatile middle ground: comfortable and stable like an MTB, but efficient and fast like a road bike.

The result is simple: more freedom, more variety, and more fun—especially in a region like Tuscany, where the best views often sit beyond the main asphalt roads.

Ultimate e-gravel? We’re in. For many riders, e-gravel is the sweet spot: the same adventure and handling, with a smoother effort on climbs and longer stages.

Escape busy roads & crowds

One of the biggest reasons people fall in love with gravel is to leave traffic behind. Tuscany’s countryside is full of quieter lanes and white roads where the pace feels calmer and the ride feels safer—without sacrificing scenery or cultural stops.

The amount of pavement vs gravel varies from itinerary to itinerary, but one thing stays true: once you’re on the white roads, you’ll encounter minimal traffic and a very different Tuscany—more authentic, more relaxed, and often more beautiful.

Why Tuscany is iconic for gravel

Tuscany is a dream for gravel because it has the perfect combination: rolling terrain, postcard landscapes, historic villages, and an incredible network of strade bianche—the “white roads” named after their pale limestone gravel.

Another big reason: Tuscany is home to world-famous cycling events, so many sections are regularly ridden and well cared for—especially in spring and autumn. Add great food and wine along the way, and it’s easy to see why Tuscany lives in every cyclist’s imagination.

Many of these legendary white roads are part of our Tuscan Gravel Tour.

Good to Know: Gravel in Tuscany

Is Tuscany suitable for first-time gravel riders?

Tuscany is stunning for gravel riding, but it’s not the easiest region for absolute beginners. The terrain is rolling, with frequent climbs and mixed surfaces.

It’s ideal for riders who already have cycling experience—especially road cyclists or mountain bikers who are used to varied terrain and elevation. If you’re coming from trekking bikes or casual cycling only, Tuscany can feel challenging rather than relaxing.

Can I ride gravel in Tuscany with an e-gravel bike?

Absolutely—e-gravel is one of the best options for Tuscany. It keeps the natural riding feel of a gravel bike, while helping with the long climbs and rolling terrain.

From a fitness point of view, it supports the aerobic effort, while still offering a real physical workout. Modern e-gravel bikes are ideal for riders who want performance, comfort, and longer days in the saddle without fatigue overload.

When is the best season for gravel riding in Tuscany?

The best months are April, May, June, September, and October.

Spring and autumn offer perfect temperatures, great road conditions, and beautiful landscapes. July and August can be very hot, and winter months are colder and less predictable. Tuscany can be ridden year-round, but these shoulder seasons offer the best balance of comfort, scenery, and riding quality.

Do you offer gravel tours only in Tuscany?

Not only. Tuscany is our home base and where we run most of our gravel trips, but we also designed a standout island itinerary in Sardinia. We’re able to do this thanks to our on-the-ground presence through a sister company—so you still get local expertise, reliable logistics, and carefully curated routes.
