Cycling & Gastronomic experience: Parma to Ravenna by bike, Prosciutto Parmigiano biking trip

Best known as the gastronomic capital of Italy – parmesan cheese, balsamic vinegar and Prosciutto di Parma – all originate from here – Emilia Romagna also offers some of the most gentle cycling in the country.

We start the bike tour  in Parma  -The city is located in the Northern part of the region Emilia-Romagna, along the Via Emilia, between the Padana flat land, the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and the coast of Liguria region behind the mountains
Parma’s center is full of art masterpieces, wide green spaces, little and big treasures from different ages, welcoming visitors and citizens all in the refined atmosphere of a petite capital. The gastronomic tradition is very remarkable, offering, besides cold cuts and cheese which are famous all over the world, first courses of homemade pasta cooked in different ways.
After 2 nights with amazing loop bike rides to Langhirano and boschi di Carrega we will move east – south of Modena through Canossa and Maranello – destination is Vignola-  famous for its cherries. Walking along the streets of the town you can visit important monuments, such as the fortress and the spiral staircase designed by the architect named Vignola.
You will stay 3 nights in Ravenna: it is a treasure chest of art, history and culture of the highest order with ancient origins and a glorious past; it was a capital three times: of the Western Roman Empire, of Theodoric King of the Goths, of the emperor of Byzantium. It houses the mortal remains of Dante Alighieri and keeps his memory alive with important events.

DAY 1

welcome to Parma

Parma is world known for three things: Ham, Parmesan cheese and Verdi, associated both in Italy and abroad with savoir faire and the good life. visit the historical city center of Parma where you’ll admire unique monuments such as: Farnese Theatre, “Camera di San Paolo”, “Ducale” Park and “Steccata” Church. Arrival to Parma on your own and Meet at hotel for bike fitting in theealry afternoon. Welcome dinner at Corale Verdi underground aquifer of volcanic origins.

DAY 2

Parmesean & Prosciutto land

CYCLING: loop from Parma to Sala Baganza, Boschi di Carrega park, Fornovo di Taro, Respiccio, Langhirano, Lesignano dei Bagni distance 82 km
SALA BAGANZA – placed along the Strada del Prosciutto, beeing one of its main production centres. Its long and eventful history is still evident in its interesting public and religious buildings. These include the Farnese Fortress (1477), the medieval quarter of San Vitale, the parish church of Talignano and the del Castellaro Oratory.
The natural surroundings are typical of the Regional Park of the Carrega Woods, where the “country house” of Duchess Maria Amalia can be admired – Event: visit parmesan producer once in Langhirano

DAY 3

Canossa, Maranello, Vignola

Bike ride to Vignola via Maranello where you can visit museo Ferrari- – distance 100 km – from Maranello to Vignola other 15 km
along the ride: Montecchio, Quattro Castella, Canossa, Casina, Viano-
Vignola is famous for the giant cherries. In the village the Palazzo Barozzi, the castle with a particolar spiral staircase – welcome dinner at hotel della Cartiera your accommodation

DAY 4

Cycle the Apennines and learn about Balsamic winegar

Today bike loop to Serramazzoni- the historic road to moutain Abetone and back via Guiglia
Distance 72 km
Event: visit traditional balsamic vinegar farm Acetaia dei Bago in the afternoon.
learn how leftover grapes are transformed into the sweet rich vinegar that can sometimes be worth hundreds of dollars. Tradition is beautifully preserved here as the historic methods of production are still in use

DAY 5

Flat bike ride to Ravenna

Bike ride from Vignola to Ravenna 145 km
From Vignola to Conselice – 100 km all flat- across pianura padana: all small rural villages.
From Conselice transfer to Ravenna – due to traffic entering in Ravenna is better take the van.
Ravenna: true jewel of art in Italy, famous for its Byzantine mosaics.
In the town there are eight UNESCO monuments, seven of which are decorated with beautiful mosaics and this art is still handed down and taught in schools and workshops of craftsman-artists.

DAY 6

Comacchio

Bike ride to Valle di Comacchio – Total flat distance 91 km
Comacchio, the “little Venice”, is an enchanting lagoon town: it’s neat and unfeigned, endowed with a vitality that comes from a strong respect for its own history and for the environment that surrounds it. The limpid brightness of the light reminds us that we are close to the sea here, and this light goes on to flood the town, only to be increased by the calm surfaces of the canals. A treasure chest of particular natural beauty and reminders of its history, Comacchio, now known as the capital of the Po Delta Park, is a little town that was born and still lives between the land and the water.

DAY 7

Bike ride part of the nove colli granfondo race

From Ravenna you will reach Forlimpopoli – from here you will ride the gran granfondo itinerary. Distance 131 km
Nove colli is Italian for “nine hills,” which feature in the Nove Colli gran fondo. The fondo is one of Italy’s most famous and popular cycling events. With more than 9,000 riders signing up within the first four minutes of registration and another 3,000 sold with hotel packages, the Nove Colli always sells out.
The ride climbs through Emilia-Romagna interior region covering the area’s rolling hills and valleys. There is no single climb in this event that will take everything out of you; it is the barrage of smaller climbs combined with the 200 km distance that is sure to wear even the most experienced riders down.
